From Coraline by Neil Gaiman (2002), Chapter 3. Coraline steps through the little door into a flat just like her own, and a woman who looks almost like her mother turns from the kitchen to welcome her: taller, thinner, paper-white, with long restless fingers and dark red nails. The warmth is the frightening part, and that is what I wanted to catch. An inspired-by print: nothing in it is taken from any film.
A stark black woodcut with a single colour, the red of her ten fingernails. Everything else is black ink and bare cream paper, which makes the welcome feel even more wrong.
The look comes from Félix Vallotton's woodcut "L'Irréparable" from his "Intimités" series (1898), Bibliothèque nationale de France. I borrowed his cutting, his flat blacks and his cut-out light. His figures and room aren't here.
I create each scene with AI image tools, then art-direct and refine it until it feels right. It's a print of a digital artwork made in the style of a woodcut, not a hand-cut woodcut or an original print. A typeset caption under the picture names the book, the moment and the style that inspired it. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the margin.
A4 or A3, unframed or framed. Every print is made to order on heavyweight 200gsm+ archival matte paper at full print quality (300 DPI). Frames are slim pine, in black, white or natural oak, with shatter-resistant plexiglass and no mount, so the print's own cream margin is the border. Framed prints arrive ready to hang. Free delivery to the UK and US, tracked on most orders. Small unframed prints going to the US are sent untracked.
