The Scene

Everybody knows this little dog. He sits at his table with his mug, smiling, while the flames climb the walls around him, and he says the one thing we all say on a bad day at work: this is fine. I wanted a version bright enough to hang over a desk and make the whole office laugh.

The Style

A bold silhouette poster: big flat shapes, crisp edges, deep cobalt and black against sunshine yellow and hot orange flames, with a little ink mottling and the colours a hair off register, the way old screen prints come out. A calm little dog in the middle of it all, and the words set large underneath. Loud, cheerful and slightly alarming, which is the point.

The Inspiration

The idea is the much-loved "This is fine" meme. The look is inspired by the Federal Art Project poster "Visit the Zoo" (1936), from the Library of Congress poster collection: its flat cut shapes and blue-violet and black on yellow. Its elephant and layout aren't here, and the dog and the room are my own design, not a copy of the original comic.

How It's Made

I create each design with AI image tools, then art-direct and refine it until it feels right, and set the lettering myself. It's a print of a digital artwork made in the style of a screen-printed poster, not a hand-pulled screen print and not an original. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the caption band.

About the meme

"This is fine" comes from a 2013 webcomic by KC Green, in which a dog sits in a burning room with his coffee and calmly says everything is fine. It became the internet's favourite way to say a day at work is going badly. My print is a tribute to that joke, with my own dog and my own room, in the style of a 1930s screen-printed poster.
