The Scene
From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865), Chapter VII. The Hatter with his watch to his ear, the March Hare, the Dormouse asleep between them as a cushion, all crowded at one corner of a long table, and Alice in the big arm-chair at the far end. Behind them is the March Hare's house, with chimneys shaped like ears and a roof thatched with fur. I couldn't leave that house out.
The Style
A colour wood engraving of the 1860s, the way Alice's first readers would have known her: a fine black line with soft, flat colour on cream paper and a loose vignette edge. Alice wears yellow here, a period choice rather than the familiar blue.
The Inspiration
The look comes from Richard Doyle's colour wood engravings for In Fairyland (1870), printed by Edmund Evans. Doyle drew for Punch alongside Tenniel, Alice's first illustrator. I borrowed his line, foliage, palette and paper. It isn't copied from Tenniel or from any film.
How It's Made
I create each scene with AI image tools, then art-direct and refine it until it feels right. It's a print of a digital artwork made in the style of a Victorian colour wood engraving, not a hand-cut engraving or an original print. A typeset caption under the picture names the book, the moment and the style that inspired it. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the margin.
Sizes and Frames
A4 or A3 (landscape), unframed or framed. Every print is made to order on heavyweight 200gsm+ archival matte paper at full print quality (300 DPI). Frames are slim pine, in black, white or natural oak, with shatter-resistant plexiglass and no mount, so the print's own cream margin is the border. Framed prints arrive ready to hang. Free delivery to the UK and US, tracked on most orders. Small unframed prints going to the US are sent untracked.
