The Witch-king at the Gate

Fine cut lines building up the dark, light carved out of black, the soft grey haze of an etched plate. These scenes are made in the style of the engravings and etchings that illustrated the great books of the nineteenth century.
A wood engraving is cut into the hard end grain of boxwood with a fine tool called a burin, which is why it can hold lines as fine as a hair. It was how most Victorian books and magazines were illustrated. An etching is drawn through a wax layer on a metal plate, and acid bites the lines. Aquatint adds soft areas of tone. I use engraving for drama, like the Witch-king bursting out of the arch, and etching for quiet grief.
