Flat colour, crisp keyed outlines, a sky that fades from blue to cream. These scenes borrow the look of the Japanese colour woodblock prints of the 1830s, the decade of the great landscape and snow series.
In a Japanese woodblock print, an artist drew the design, a carver cut it into blocks of cherry wood, one for each colour, and a printer pressed them onto paper by hand. The printers' graded skies, called bokashi, and the new imported Prussian blue gave the prints of the 1830s their famous colour. I borrow that look, the flat colour, the outlines and the grain of the wood, for scenes it was never used for: a sandworm on Arrakis and a lamp-post in a snowy Narnian wood.
