Something Long and Black
From £19.99
Velvet black, scraped moonlight and hard cut shapes. These are the darkest prints in the shop, in the two styles that do darkness best.
A mezzotint works from dark to light. The whole plate is roughened until it would print solid black, then the artist scrapes and burnishes it smooth wherever light should fall. Nothing else gives that soft, glowing darkness, which is why I chose it for a moonlit churchyard. A woodcut is the opposite: cut along the plank, bold and flat, with nothing in between. Félix Vallotton made black woodcuts in the 1890s that still feel modern, and they were my starting point for Coraline.
