Boo basket ideas for book lovers
A boo basket is a little Halloween gift basket of treats for someone you love, the spooky cousin of an Easter basket. For a reader, the best ones are built around a book. Here is how I would fill one.

What is a boo basket?
It started as a neighbourhood game: you leave a basket of treats on someone's doorstep, knock, and run, and they pass the fun on. Now it is any small Halloween gift basket for a friend, a partner or a book club. The rule is simple: everything in it should feel like October.
The book
Start with a gothic novel they have not read yet. A nice edition of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hound of the Baskervilles or Coraline works for almost anyone. If you need ideas, here is my list of 11 gothic novels to read this Halloween. Tuck a handwritten bookmark inside with a line from it, like "Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!" from Dracula.
Something to read it with
- A candle with a smoky, woody or spiced scent
- Thick socks or a small blanket in black, plum or deep green
- A tin of loose tea or hot chocolate, and a mug
- A book light, for reading late with the lights off
Treats
Toffee apples, dark chocolate, pumpkin biscuits, a bag of sweets in black and orange wrappers. Keep it small and good rather than big and plastic.
Something for the wall
A print of a scene from a book they love outlasts the sweets by years. Lay an unframed print flat at the back of the basket, or put a framed one in as the centrepiece. For a Coraline fan, the Other Mother welcoming Coraline to lunch:
For a Dracula reader, the Whitby churchyard by moonlight:
For a Sherlock Holmes fan, the hound on the moor:
Three boo baskets at three budgets
- Under £25: a paperback classic, a bag of treats and a handwritten bookmark.
- Around £40: add a candle, socks and an unframed A4 print, which is £19.99 on its own.
- The showstopper: a hardback edition, a blanket, tea and a mug, and a framed print as the centrepiece, ready to hang.
Make it from their favourite book
The best boo basket is one that could only be for them. If they love Coraline, add a set of black buttons and a tiny key. For Dracula, add garlic-shaped chocolates and a postcard of Whitby. For Sherlock Holmes, add a magnifying glass. Little touches like these turn a basket of treats into a proper present.
