The Scene

From Dune by Frank Herbert (1965), Book Two. Hunted, with nowhere left to run, Paul takes the controls of a small winged flying machine and heads straight into a great sandstorm, because it is the one place no one will follow. I love that choice. This is an inspired-by print: nothing in it is taken from any film.

The Style

I wanted the storm to be the whole picture, so I gave it the look of a late-Victorian storm watercolour: wet washes, granulation, blooms and bare paper, the sun drowning behind the sand. Somewhere in there is one tiny flying machine, no bigger than a mosquito.

The Inspiration

The look comes from Winslow Homer's watercolour "Hurricane, Bahamas" (1898), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I borrowed only his fast, wet handling of a storm. His palms, roofs and sea aren't here.

How It's Made

I create each scene with AI image tools, then art-direct and refine it until it feels right. It's a print of a digital artwork made in the style of a watercolour, not a hand-painted watercolour or an original. A typeset caption under the picture names the book, the moment and the style that inspired it. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the margin.

Sizes and Frames

A4 or A3, unframed or framed. Every print is made to order on heavyweight 200gsm+ archival matte paper at full print quality (300 DPI). Frames are slim pine, in black, white or natural oak, with shatter-resistant plexiglass and no mount, so the print's own cream margin is the border. Framed prints arrive ready to hang. Free delivery to the UK and US, tracked on most orders. Small unframed prints going to the US are sent untracked.

A pair with my Dune print "Wormsign": the desert's two great dangers, the worm and the storm.
